Lights, Camera … Class! College Classes Iconic Movie and TV Show Characters Would Take

Ever wondered what KU College classes your favorite TV and movie characters would enroll in? Whether they’d be struggling through midterms or sailing through their weekly quizzes, we’ve matched some iconic characters to College courses that are perfect for them.

Michael Scott (The Office) – COMS 330, Effective Business Communication

Michael Scott might be the “World’s Best Boss” (according to his mug) but everyone knows his communication could use some schooling. This course focuses on writing skills to meet the needs of a business, exposes students to common situations, and develops skills in professional presentations. The master of inappropriate jokes and cringe-worthy meetings, Michael would definitely benefit from this course. The night before a big exam he probably would have a routine even though he’s not superstitious … but he is a little “stitious.”

Rory Gilmore (Gilmore Girls) – ENGL 220, Introduction to Creative Writing

Books are Rory Gilmore’s first love (step aside, Dean, Logan, and Jess). This English department course would help her sharpen her skills in writing, so she could one day pen her own novel. Focused on creative assignments, Rory would be able to pour her heart out – and get credit for it! And, of course, her late-night study sessions would be fueled by coffee from Luke’s Diner.

Miles Morales (Spider-Man) – ART 121, Fundamentals of Printmaking

Miles might be best known for being a superhero, but he is also a talented artist. This introductory printmaking course would be ideal for him to further his graffiti-inspired designs while learning new techniques. The class explores basic technical and expressive possibilities in the printmaking field.

Joey Tribbiani (Friends) – THR 106, Acting I

Joey Tribbiani would be right at home in THR 106, Acting I. Even though his past roles (Dr. Drake Ramoray ring a bell?) might have been … laughable, he would thrive in this interactive course, which focuses on terminology, actor’s instruments, analyzing scripts, and critically responding to performance. Maybe he could even give a guest lecture on dramatic soap opera reactions.

Shuri (Black Panther) – BIOL 636, Biochemistry I

Shuri is no stranger to advanced technologies – and this biochemistry course would be the perfect complement to her skills.  While she wouldn’t be using Vibranium in the lab, she would still develop her understanding of biology in this class, which is the first semester of a two-semester lecture course focused on macromolecules, membranes, and much more. Curing diseases and leading global health initiatives? Check.

Penelope Featherington (Bridgerton) - ENGL 334, Major Authors: Austen and Hardy

Penelope is most comfortable with a pen in her hand and a writing project. She’d be all in on a class revolving around literary icons like Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy. The course includes reading major novels from the authors, studying issues they explore, and looking into the roles of women in society. Add in a class discussion on hidden identities and forbidden love, and she’d feel right at home.

Moana (Moana) – EVRN 160, Environmental Solutions

Moana would be an A+ student in any class focused on sustainability. She’d enjoy leading class discussions on various topics like climate change and conserving the ocean. This course focuses on understanding concepts and skills in the functions of environmental systems. Group project assigned? Moana is already making the team group chat.

Jon Snow (Game of Thrones) – LDST 420, Communication, Leadership, & Conflict Management

Jon Snow is a true leader as the King in the North. Jon could take notes on mediating conflict whether it’s between House Stark and House Lannister or House Targaryen and House Baratheon. The course will emphasize the theories of conflict management and how to address situations involving interpersonal, organization, and systemic conflict. He might be a man of few words, but that would be quickly fixed with a course module on communication.

Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation) – POLS 320, Introduction to Public Policy

If Introduction to Public Policy had 25 students, Leslie Knope would be one of them. If it had just one student, that student would be Leslie Knope. She’d be a passionate contributor to policy debates and always up for discussing zoning laws. This introductory class focuses on the policy-making process including formulation, adoption, and implementation. The downside? Leslie might completely take over class.

Mark S. (Severance) – PHIL 170, The Meaning of Life

It’s safe to say that both innie and outie Mark would have serious opinions on the nature of identity, self, and free will. Navigating the eerie world of Lumon, Mark could benefit from taking a step back and doing some reflecting for an essay on consciousness. The course will analyze central questions about the meaning of life. Let’s hope he makes it to 100% completion in this Meaning of Life course.

Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) – POLS 316, Public Opinion & American Democracy

This Political Science class would take Elle Woods’s understanding and passion for law and justice to a new level – and you know she’d always be down for a debate on media perceptions and the way they shape democracy. This course examines the construction, administration, and interpretation of public opinion polls. Getting into law school after this course would be a piece of cake for Elle after taking this class! “What, like it’s hard?”
